We have all seen all the headlines: Canadian inflation is up 6.8%, gas prices are soaring, and everything is becoming more expensive. The rising cost of living also makes it harder to manage our money goals, like paying off debt and saving for rainier days. However, with a little creativity, you can make a game out of your personal finances. Here is an idea for you to try:

  • At the top of a sheet of paper, add a title to describe the goal you are working on.
    • For example, “Pay off $2000 Credit Card Debt”.
  • Next draw a thermometer with segment lines every inch or so
    • Add encouraging statement at each segment like “Great Job!” and “Almost There!” etc.
  • Stick it on the fridge or another prominent spot in your home where you can see it
  • Each time you make a payment, put the amount and the date next to the first segment from the bottom
    • Then fill in the space with your favourite colour or design
    • The idea is create a visual aide to help you track your progress. Ideally, you’ll be excited and motivated to reach your goal
  • When you have filled in the entire thermometer, reward yourself — but do it without spending any money: binge your favourite show; go for a walk or a ride on your bike; read a favourite book — or whatever makes you happy
  • Now, do it again with your next goal and remember: Have fun!
